We are a Novice Friendly Region

CNY SCCA is making a conscious effort to appeal to new participants to help grow this exciting sport. We do not have a novice chair and we will not have a novice course walk. Instead, we will be taking a more personalized approach by having several novice mentors at each event; ideally there will be one novice mentor for each novice in attendance.

The main objective is simple: the novice mentor is the go-to person for a specific novice. We do not anticipate being a novice mentor will be a huge demand on anyone's time. The role of novice mentor is not a work assignment. Everyone who is a novice mentor will also have a traditional work assignment. A novice mentor is not necessarily an autocross instructor. Rather, novice mentors are experienced autocrossers of all skill levels who are familiar with how events flow.

More about Novice Mentors

If you have been autocrossing for at least 2 years and have participated in at least 10 autocross events over the course of your lifetime we would greatly appreciate it you would consider becoming a novice mentor.

When you mentor, you also refine your own skill set in the process because it forces you to think about WHY you do the things you do and how they combine to lead to a rewarding outcome. If you have ever done any teaching, coaching, or instructing in any field you likely know gratifying it can be to help some new learn the ropes of an area of interest that you enjoy.

Protocols, terms, and procedures experienced autocrossers take for granted can be overwhelming to someone new. If a novice is assigned a specific mentor, it is our belief that he/she will be more comfortable approaching that person and asking for clarification rather than feeling confused and hesitant to ask a "silly question" to a random stranger.

The one task that will take a few minutes is a course walk. Since there will be no novice chief, there will be no massive novice walk. Novices will walk the course with their mentors one-on- one (maybe 2:1). From a big picture perspective, this should actually save time because the drivers meeting will not be held up by the novice walk.

Registration Process

All registration* will be done on-line via MotorsportReg.com

Most work assignments will be determined the night before the event by the event chair. PLEASE be sure to fill out the MotorsportReg form carefully.

If necessary, work assignment changes will be made prior to the drivers’ meeting. Priority will be given to changes related to safety and health. It is the participant’s responsibility to notify the event chair ASAP if a change is desired. For example, if you sprain your foot 2 days before the event and will not be able to chase cones, e-mail the event chair (via MSR) right away. DO NOT WAIT until the morning of the event to provide this information. Your ability to participate affects ALL participants, not just you and the event chair.

Payment will be collected at the time of registration. If you cancel at least 24 hours prior to the start time of the event, you will receive a full refund. This policy applies to CNY SCCA-hosted events only. Out of region event policies are determined by the hosting region.

Registration Costs:

  • $40 for SCCA Members
  • $60 for non-SCCA Members ($40 entry fee + $20 weekend membership fee)
    * You can later apply up to 2 weekend memberships towards a full membership (a $40 discount)
    * The $20 fee will be refunded to first-time-ever autocrossers after completing first CNY SCCA event.
    * You are only a first-time-ever autocrosser once in your lifetime.
  • You will be charged when you register
  • If you cancel at least 24-hours before the event starts, you will receive a full refund.
    * Car, class, and number changes can be made on-site if necessary
  • An ADDITIONAL $20 fee will be added to anyone registering on-site
  • On-site registration is not guaranteed to be available

PLEASE be sure to fill out the MotorsportReg form carefully.

More about the $20 Refund

Our objective here is to lower the bar to sample an autocross. We hope that first-timers will want to come back and also see the benefits of becoming an SCCA member.

Novices participating in a CNY SCCA Autocross as their first autocross in their lifetime are eligible to receive a refund of the $20 weekend membership fee after the event. In other words, first-timers register and pay $60 ($40 event fee +$20 weekend membership), then attend the event, and then get a $20 refund. Anyone who has attended a previous autocross is not eligible for the $20 refund, regardless of which entity put on the event, be it the SCCA or some other organization.

Oswego County Airport Additional Notes

Please note that due to site-specific regulations, we cannot allow minors (anyone under age 18) to compete at this site.

Because we will be using a combined paddock/grid there will be a limit of 50 registered entries.

Run group 1 will grid at the Western end (furthest from entry gate). Run group 2 will grid at the Eastern end (closer to entry gate). Only competition and event administration vehicles will be permitted in the paddock/grid area. All support vehicles must park on the asphalt strip north of the grid/paddock. Any tents erected must be one the grass between the paddock/grid and the support vehicle area and MUST be secured at ALL FOUR corners.

We are competing next to an ACTIVE airfield. Extra care must be taken to ensure that no trash (pieces of paper, food wrappers, etc…) blow away or otherwise create a distraction to pilots.
